The 6+1 Trait® Writing framework is a powerful way to learn and use a common language to refer to characteristics of writing as well as create a common vision of what 'good' writing looks like. Teachers and students can use the 6+1 Trait model to pinpoint areas of strength and weakness as they continue to focus on improved writing.
Education Northwest’s Assessment Program is best known for its 6+1 Trait® Writing Model products, trainings, and scoring services. More than 20,000 teachers have benefitted from this reseach-based approach to improving student writing. The Assessment Program also trains educators in how to design classroom assessments to improve content-area instruction.
Education Northwest Magazine is published three times a year by the Education Northwest. Education Northwest Magazine aims to promote a regional dialogue and to elevate teaching and learning by giving readers the best information, ideas, and personal stories from practitioners, researchers, and other experts.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) is an unprecedented investment by the federal government in changing students’ lives. The more than $100 billion in funds will not only help financially strapped school systems retain jobs, but will also support educational reforms and innovations. Our Northwest Education Recovery Clearinghouse is your source for resources and planning tools for wise investments, as well as services aligned with ARRA priorities.
The Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center housed at Education Northwest is federally funded to assist state departments of education in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming in the implementation of NCLB legislation. The Center specifically works on the issues of statewide systems of support for low-performing schools and districts, Response to Intervention services, accommodations for English language learner students, and promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) opportunities.
The Oregon Parental Information and Resource Center strengthens partnerships between families and schools. We offer online and face-to-face trainings and Web resources in Spanish and English to help parents understand their rights under NCLB. We also support families so that their young children are ready to enter school.
REL Northwest is one of 10 federally funded regional educational laboratories that works to link educators to scientifically based research. As part of this mission, we conduct regional needs assessments to determine what the top issues and trends are in the Northwest. This information then guides our research and technical assistance efforts. Recent research focuses on topics such as Response to Intervention, Supplemental Educational Services, and achievement of American Indian and Alaska Native students.
Education Northwest’s Research Unit provides consultation and services for all aspects of the research process, including measurement design; data collection, management, and analysis; technical writing; and presentation.
The Volunteer Leadership Center at Education Northwest works to build the capacity of national and regional volunteer programs, including AmeriCorps, VISTA, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve America. We train new national service volunteers and share best practices with program directors and supervisors so that they can better meet critical community needs.
